Decathlon Ticker: Results from the 2023 World Championships

Day 1

The 2023 World Athletics Championships got underway in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday, July 15th, with the decathlon competition. The first day of competition saw athletes compete in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 meters.

In the 100 meters, Grenada's Lindon Victor took the early lead, winning his heat in a time of 10.76 seconds. However, it was reigning world champion Kevin Mayer of France who had the fastest time of the day, winning his heat in 10.62 seconds.

In the long jump, India's Swapnil Kusale took the early lead with a jump of 7.71 meters. However, it was Estonia's Maicel Uibo who had the best jump of the day, leaping 8.03 meters to take the lead in the event.

Day 2

The second day of competition saw athletes compete in the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500 meters.

In the 110-meter hurdles, reigning world champion Omar McLeod of Jamaica won his heat in a time of 13.22 seconds. However, it was American Devon Allen who had the fastest time of the day, winning his heat in 13.19 seconds.

In the discus throw, Daniel Ståhl of Sweden took the early lead with a throw of 67.10 meters. However, it was Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia who had the best throw of the day, throwing 71.23 meters to take the lead in the event.

Day 3

The final day of competition saw athletes compete in the 1500 meters, javelin throw, and 1500 meters.

In the 1500 meters, Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya won his heat in a time of 3:35.90. However, it was Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway who had the fastest time of the day, winning his heat in 3:32.79.

In the javelin throw, Johannes Vetter of Germany took the early lead with a throw of 89.45 meters. However, it was Anderson Peters of Grenada who had the best throw of the day, throwing 90.46 meters to take the lead in the event.

Results

The decathlon competition concluded on Sunday, July 17th, with Kevin Mayer of France winning the gold medal with a score of 8834 points. Lindon Victor of Grenada won the silver medal with a score of 8751 points, and Ricky Freimuth of the United States won the bronze medal with a score of 8670 points.

In the decathlon, athletes compete in ten different events over the course of three days. The events include the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters, 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500 meters.
