Early Life and Career

Avery DeWitt Johnson, born on March 25, 1965, is an American basketball coach, commentator, and former player. He played basketball at Southern University and enjoyed a successful career in the NBA, playing for the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Mavericks.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Johnson began his coaching career with the Mavericks as an assistant coach in 2000. In 2005, he became the head coach of the Mavericks and led them to the NBA Finals in 2006.

Brooklyn Nets

In 2010, Johnson was hired by the Brooklyn Nets as their head coach. However, he was fired after a disappointing start to the 2012-2013 season.

Return to Coaching

Johnson took a break from coaching before returning to Alabama as their head coach in 2015. He spent five seasons at Alabama, leading them to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Broadcasting Career

After leaving Alabama, Johnson retired from coaching and joined ESPN as a basketball analyst and commentator. He has since become a respected figure in the basketball media.
