Romanian Genetic Study Reveals Slavic Influence

Romanian genetic study reveals Slavic influence

Study of Mitochondrial DNA suggests significant Slavic ancestry in Transylvania

A recent study of the Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of the population of the Romanian provinces has shown that the Transylvania region has a significant Slavic ancestry.

Genetic analysis paints a picture of Transylvania's past

The study, conducted by researchers from the Romanian Academy of Sciences, analyzed the mtDNA of over 1,000 individuals from Transylvania and other parts of Romania. The results showed that the mtDNA of the Transylvanian population was most closely related to that of Slavic populations from Eastern Europe, such as Poland, Ukraine, and Russia.

This suggests that the Transylvanian population has a significant Slavic ancestry, likely due to the migration of Slavic peoples into the region during the Middle Ages. The study also found that the Slavic ancestry was more pronounced in the northern and central parts of Transylvania, while the southern part of the region showed a greater mix of Slavic and other genetic influences.

The findings of the study provide new insights into the genetic history of the Romanian people and the complex migrations that have shaped the region over time.
